Description
Convenient to public transport this property is under renovation. However, the owner of Stone Croft, for more than 40 years, a disabled veteran, must now relocate to a single-story home for health reasons. The origin of its name is taken from an old British name "Croft'' indicting a small house or garden, in this case separated by a fence with a the number of stones. Hence, Stone Croft. It was located on the edge of the neighborhood named Swampoodle, i.e. swamps and puddles, named by the livery workers and Irish immigrants. The existing home was first designed and built as a rental investment by Charles J. Uhlman, then surveyor for the city of Georgetown. During 1862-65 the entire block of G to H and 6th to 7th streets was a Union Army encampment. Today there is a Capitol Bikeshare station at the corner where military mounts used to be tethered. For those who prefer to walk, or walk a pet, seven blocks south there is a cultural landscape originally named "No.5" by Pierre L'Enfant in 1791, which was later named Stanton Park after the Civil War Secretary to War and Supreme Court Associate Justice. It's a great walk! Recently the H Street Street Car line was reopened running from Benning Road to Union Station. All stops and streetcars are ADA accessible, and no fares are charged. By going east on the H Street Corridor one can reach the revitalized Atlas Performing Arts Center which was first opened in 1947. Along the corridor one can find eateries such as Cava (primarily Greek), Nando's (South African), one-half a block away there is a Starbuck's. It's only an eight block stroll to the elegant 108 year-old Union Station which is a mixed-use transportation hub servicing Metro, Amtrak, MARC, VRE Commuter Rail, and Greyhound Bus. Fashion lovers can stop in at Victoria's Secret, Joseph A. Bank, Body Shop, Uniglo, or Andrews Tie's shop, and there's an extensive food-court. By going another three blocks one can reach the best restaurant in the NE Quarter, The Monocle - with it's superb cuisine! Rather dine in? There are a number of nearby grocery stores, starting across the street with Whole Foods, two blocks east is the H Street Organic Market, and Giant Foods located five blocks west. Should the reader wish to preview Stone Croft in line to purchase the property do not approach directly, rather call the listing agent for an appointment. Because the property is an active-worksite visitors must sign a "Release of Liability" for any personal property damage, or harm, as a result of contact with work being done by craftsman, workers, or plumbers.
